Removal & Installation

2001-04 Models

See the procedures under Upper Control Arm, Lower Arm A, and Lower Arm B.

2005-06 Models
  1. Loosen the wheel nuts slightly.
  2. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations.
  3. Remove the wheel nuts and rear wheel.
  4. Remove the caliper mounting bolts, and hang the caliper assembly (A) to one side. To prevent damage to the caliper assembly or brake hose, use a short piece of wire to hang the caliper from the undercarriage.

  6. Remove the brake disc retaining screws.
  7. Release the parking brake, and remove the brake disc/drum.
  8. Screw two 8 x 1.25mm bolts into the brake disc/drum to push it away from the hub. Turn each bolt two turns at a time to prevent cocking the brake disc/drum excessively.
  9. Remove the hub bearing unit (A) and O-ring (B).

  13. Remove the wheel sensor (A), the O-ring (B), and the sensor harness (C) from the knuckle (D). Do not disconnect the wheel sensor connector.
    NOTE
Use a new O-ring on reassembly.

  19. Install the knuckle in the reverse order of removal, and note these items:

    1. Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when connecting the upper arm to the knuckle.
    2. Use a new self-locking nut when reinstalling the bottom of the damper.
    3. Use a new washer, and a new special self-locking nut when reinstalling the lower arm A.
    4. Before connecting the ball joint to the knuckle, degrease the threaded section and tapered portion of the ball joint pin, the connecting hole, and the threaded section and mating surface of the castle nut.
    5. Torque the castle nut to the lower torque specification, then tighten it only far enough to align the slot with the hole in the stud. Do not align the castle nut by loosening it.
    6. First install all the components and lightly tighten the bolts and nuts, then raise the suspension to load it with the vehicle's weight before fully tightening to the specified torque values.
    7. Tighten all mounting hardware to the specified torque values.
    8. Before installing the wheel, clean the mating surface on the brake disc and the inside of the wheel.
    9. Check the wheel alignment, and adjust it if necessary.

  20. Install the hub bearing unit in the reverse order of removal, and pay particular attention to the following items:

    1. Use a new O-ring on reassembly.
    2. Tighten all mounting hardware to the specified torque values.
    3. Before installing the brake disc, clean the matching surfaces of the hub bearing unit and brake disc.
